wi-fi @ the airport

Tuesday, January 17th, 2006

i never realised how easy it was to get online at the airport wi-fi. Hell, i’ve even stopped off at the bar and am charging my laptop with a spare powerpoint and having a cool beverage whilst watching the cricket on the plasma. If i we’re not paying $10 an hour to be online, i reckon i could almost live here. Oh, and the beers are about $8.

I wouldn’t say that the speed is blazing fast, but it’s pretty decent. And having a telstra mobile lets me connect straight away and they’ll just charge it to my mobile account.

Although sadly, it seems that they’re blocking my BitTorrent downloads.

In fact it seems that everytime i fire up bittorrent i get kicked off the wi-fi and recieve the access password again via my mobile, jeez i hope that doesn’t mean that they’re charging me ten bucks everytime!!!

Oh, i’m back, it seems my lockout is only temporary, either that or the access is just a bit on and off.

my own little boonie buddie

Saturday, January 14th, 2006

The Boonanza is on, this year the VB series has embraced a Boonanza, i’m loving the TV ads and was pretty keen to get my hands on one of the new Boonie Dolls. It has one of the worst websites of all-time, but it’s an amazingly awesome idea. You sit Boonie in front of your TV and he talks to you in time with on-field cricket acheivements in VB Series matches.

boonie!

The first game (since i’ve had my little Boonie) starts tomorrow, so i’m pretty pumped to watch him in action. The only downside was that i had to buy 2 slabs of VB to aquire him, but hey – it’s all beer in the end.

Pandora, a revelation!

Thursday, January 12th, 2006

I’ve started using Pandora lately. Pandora describes itself as this…

Pandora is a music discovery service designed to help you find and enjoy music that you’ll love. It’s powered by the Music Genome Project, the most comprehensive analysis of music ever undertaken. Just tell us one of your favorite songs or artists and we’ll launch a streaming station to explore that part of the music universe.

I found it by listening to a podcast from Leo Laporte and some annoying woman called Inside The Net, and it sounded a bit too good to be true. But i’ve been using it for a couple of weeks now and it is just the most amazing thing i have ever found to discover and listen to new music.

I was rejoicing when The iTunes Music Store was finally released in Australia, but hey – who needs to buy music when all you have to do is choose a few bands you like and then sit back and hear an awesome selection of new (and old) music from recognised (and un-recognised) artists completely free.

Apparantly they will be inserting ads into the free version in the future, but for US$36 per year you can have an ad-free version. Now for all the music you can listen to, i would say that’s pretty reasonable. The more i think about it, who needs to actually own music when you can listen to great music that you enjoy all the time without needing to collect it. All the music i listen to is digital now anyway, so this way i get great music all the time and i don’t even need to dedicate my own hard drive space to it. It almost sounds too good to be true, and maybe it is. These guys aren’t making any money yet, so i’m going to enjoy it while it lasts.

Embarrassing whiplash

Monday, January 9th, 2006

I’ve got whiplash ( C4 Whiplash to be specific) and although i have been telling people i got it whilst saving a child from a shark attack down in some rough seas in tassie, it was actually something a bit less likely.

I was helping Jayzee move house on Wednesday and i was very careful to bend my knees and keep my back in good shape whilst lifting. I’ve had some back problems in the past and i didn’t want t do anything stupid and not be able to walk for a week. I was all good, he moved in without a hitch and i got to drive a truck. We had a parma and a couple of beers and i went home.

When i got home i was feeling a bit sweaty and i figured i’d have a shower, only when i got out of the shower and i was drying my hair with the towel i felt a nasty feeling in the back of my neck. Crap, i figured i had put my back out. This has happened before, it’s sore for a while and then it goes away. 2 days later, it had not gone away and i had to head off to Matt’s Bucks Party. Alas, a few days of solid drinking didn’t seem to help the paint very much and so today i decided to visit the doc to see what he though.

Turns out i’ve torn a ligament and got whiplash. So i’m resting the head for a couple of days and hoping that i’ll be right by Matt’s Wedding next week. I can’t really turn my head to the right, or look down very far and i keep tilting it to the left and over-compensating, i’m sure that’s not good either. As long as i keep it still and supported it doesn’t hurt too much, but the doc ha prescribed some Valium to keep me relaxed, and Celebrex to do something else. It’s for old people, by the looks – maybe it’s to keep me young?
